SYDA answers the Nov. 2023 complaint of sexual abuse. Read their response (complete and total denial, no surprise there) HERE.
An anonymous contributor identifying as a victim of Muktananda’s sexual abuse reacts to the SYDA Fdtn. response:
I am experiencing a lot of anger and sadness around the response of complete denial to the complaint. Such harm was done to us and to have it all denied in writing by a lawyer just sets the whole thing off for me again. I guess I was hoping there would be an admission of what happened. I’m not really sure what I was hoping for or thinking, and I do completely understand they are doing legal posturing, and yet, my emotional self just feels lost and her rights and value as a person dismissed. I gave myself, body mind and heart for over 3 decades of my life and this is what I’m getting back in return. I loved so deeply and with such purity and abandon. I feel so betrayed. Again.

January 2020. The facts from one of the only survivors of Muktananda’s pedophilia to go public.
Dorel (formerly Namrata) LaVie has chosen to make public her claim that she was sexually abused by Swami Muktananda when she was 16 years old. Dorel worked for many years after 1982 in the privacy of Gurumayi’s home. She claims that she personally knew at least 20 other girls and women who were abused. I (Dan Shaw) have spoken only to 3 of these women, including Dorel, but have been told of many others. Dorel staged a one-woman protest on New Year’s Day at the Oakland Ashram, 2020. Her sign read: “Muktananda raped me in 1982 when I was 16 years old. #Time’sUp #MeToo.” One of Dorel’s statements from the Facebook group “Muktananda Was A Pedophile, Gurumayi Covers It Up” can be read HERE.
Dorel has started a private Facebook group. If you wish to join, you must send her a request. No hackers and decoys and trolls please. You may request to join by doing so at

Siddha Yogis Tell the Truth
For many years, devotees have hesitated or not felt safe to tell their stories of sexual or other* harm they experienced within Siddha Yoga. Now is the time for those voices to be heard in a way that honors their experience.
We are a group of former devotees who want to create a safe place for survivors to tell these stories, to support those speaking, and to carefully protect their identities.
*physical, financial, emotional, or spiritual.
Our project is called Siddha Yogis Tell the Truth.
We stand for: Truth. Transparency. Acknowledgement.
Here’s our commitment to you. We will:
• Provide a safe, caring place for you to tell your story of sexual or other harm at a Siddha Yoga ashram, center or tour stop.
• Stand in solidarity with you as you decide if, and how, your story should be shared.
Siddha Yogis Tell the Truth has retained Carol Merchasin, a retired lawyer, to talk to anyone who comes forward via our mailbox, SYtellthetruth@gmail.com. We will maintain a strict protocol of confidentiality—see below.
Carol has extensive experience in trauma-informed interviews of survivors of misconduct in spiritual communities, having previously led sexual abuse inquiries into the Shambhala, FPMT, and Sivananda communities, among others. Her work has been recognized by the New York Times, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the BBC.
If you feel you were harmed or abused within the Siddha Yoga community, please consider reaching out to SYtellthetruth@gmail.com. And, please help us spread the word: if you know of someone who was harmed or abused, please pass this along to them. Also, if you can, please post this announcement broadly on social media; you may need to copy and paste.
______________________________ __________
Our Care and Confidentiality Protocol
Nothing about you, without you.
Before sharing anything with Carol, you can ask her as many questions as you like about how a conversation with her would work; we want you to be 100% comfortable.
You, and you alone, will decide:
1. If you want your name to be shared with anyone else.
2. What you want to talk about, and for how long.
3. If Carol should take any further steps, as a result of what you share.
Carol will:
1. Listen with empathy, care and understanding.
2. Draw on her experience conducting many similar interviews with survivors of abuse.
3. Gently ask questions to understand your experience more correctly.

Raniere is now in jail, awaiting what is likely to be a life sentence for the crimes he committed as the leader of his self-empowerment community. Click HERE for info on The Vow.

Anne Hamilton-Byrne (known as Ma Yoga Shakti in Siddha Yoga), the founder of The Family, was instrumental in helping Swami Tejomayananda and Swami Abhayananda (Stan Trout) leave Siddha Yoga. LSD was frequently used by the group. Abhayananda reports he knew nothing of the abuse or other problems there. Read excerpt here. (Apr 00)
“Five Step Guideline For Speakers. When you are sharing your experiences in a talk, it is important to establish a clear intention for telling your experience.” So states a handout for speakers as designed by SY. Newsgroups can be a frustrating process. Most ISP’s only hold the messages for about 5 days or so. Not all messages get sent to all the ISP’s and may display late or not at all on each person’s newsserver. For now, the best way to see all the messages and to post easily, is directly via dejanews.
